That’s the way, Jimmy Page;

“If I ever really felt depressed, I would just start putting on all my old records that I played as a kid, because the whole thing that really lifted me then still lifted me during those other times. It was good medicine for me, and it still does that for me when I put something on. Isn’t it wonderful that we’ve got all that good medicine? I think it’s got to be all part of our DNA, this mass communication through music. That’s what it is. It’s got to be, hasn’t it? Music is the one thing that has been consistently there for me. It hasn’t let me down.”

Oh, hey there Sheepy

Brand New is finally UNSIGNED!; I’m a mountain that has been moved

“This is one of our first shows as an unsigned band in eight years or something like that… and it feels really nice, to not have anything cluttering up our lives anymore”

– Jesse Lacey @ Clifton Park, NY, 4/28/10 (source: here)

If you have ever experienced a Brand New concert (or 8, or 13), you should know that it is difficult to actually enjoy it – the fans usually ruin it with their fangirlish screams. Everyone at their shows just assume that Brand New, who used to be signed to Interscope, have the same concert morals and values as their peer bands that have been as successful as them (Ever been to a Taking Back Sunday show? God, they love to entertain. Do we really need to wear suits on stage?)

ANY ways, their shows usually start with the members walking on stage, and end with them walking off stage in the same fashion. Music is played in between. Isn’t that all we really need? They don’t feel the need to put on a “show”, they’re just there to share their music with those who are willing to hear. Jesse Lacey once said that was his goal was “to write some songs that mean so much to people, and sound so beautiful, that people want to fall apart and sleep forever,” and I can’t help but to wonder how it must feel to have reached that.

The 4 (sometimes 5?) band mates and friends have been consistently humble, gracious and modest – some qualities more bands needs to acquire. They are indifferent to anyone and anything that doesn’t have to do with genuine noise. They have never been all about “the scene” and selling out. They’ve never done anything to please anyone but themselves, and while they got a small taste of selling out, they let it go, because as soon as you give into all this corporate pop music bullshit, you’re automatically disgracing the music you make because it becomes about something more than music. Brand New has always made the nobel choice in order to a keep the sounds they make and the words that come from their brains genuine and sacred. And that, is one of many reasons why fans are so attracted and addicted to this band. Sometimes I sit and wonder why I have loved this band as much as I do, for as long as I have. I think I’ve just answered the question, no?

I could write about this band until dawn, but animals need sleep too.. So, lets get on with it, and celebrate that Brand new is now unsigned and free to let their minds wander in which ever creative direction they desire. Have a glass of wine! Smoke a fattie! Go out dancing! Spin in your chair until you feel really dizzy! Go grazing in the finest fields! Whatever you see fit. We are EXTREMELY excited to see which new path these men will create and build. We could not be happier for their independence as artists. Will they sign with a new label, or record with their own Procrastinate Music Traitors? It’s too soon to tell, but we’re excited to find out. One thing I can say right now is that these guys are too passionate about what they do to stop playing music.

When you think I’m sunk, I will float on and on

Bon Iver – Come Talk To Me (Peter Gabriel cover);

A while ago, even before the fruitful seeds of spring had been sown into the ground, we made a post regarding Bon Iver’s ‘Flume’ covered by no other than Peter Gabriel (here). Well, today we bring you just the opposite!

On April 17, 2010, in celebration of “Record Store Day” a special Vinyl of the two covers is being released. More information can be found here on the Vintage Vinyl website.

Vernon could have picked up a guitar and taken a standard approach to the cover, but that is not how a Bon Iver project works. Its very spirit has become collaborative and experimental. By enlisting the help of Bon Iver regular Sean Carey, as well his sister and brother in law, Vernon made this a Bon Iver affair, and expanded the Bon Iver family yet further.

Vintage Vinyl

So, be sure (SURE) to check out Bon Iver’s cover of Peter Gabriel’s ‘Come Talk To Me’ and if you, you know, like it – borrow it, try it on, see how it fits and then buy it!

I can imagine the moment
Breaking out through the silence
All the things that we both might say
And the heart it will not be denied
‘Til we’re both on the same damn side
All the barriers blown away

I said please talk to me
Won’t you please come talk to me
Just like it used to be
Come on, come talk to me
I did not come to steal
This all is so unreal
Can you show me how you feel now
Come on, come talk to me

Oh, and we promise to stop being crappy and non-existent bloggers soon – really soon. Forgive us?

Tigers on Trains – Official Interview!

Hey Everyone!
A few months ago we did a few entries on Tiger’s on Trains and The Republic of Wolves:
Tigers on Trains; New Demo on Myspace
The Republic of Wolves; “The Clouds” Demo
Mason Covers Vampire Weekend

Tigers on Trains is a two piece band from Long Island, New York consisting of Mason Maggio and Christian Van Deurs. They have been getting quite a lot of attention over here, and we were lucky enough to be granted the opportunity to do an interview with them. This is their first official interview as a band, and we hope you guys enjoy it as much we did!

There is more to these two men then the music they make. Their answers are incredibly insightful and thoughtful and even at time, humorous. Tigers on Trains is in a word, brilliant and it is with great hope and eager paws/hooves that more ears will allow the hearts below them to flutter with emotion and the mind above to indulge itself in creative thought. While they may be new to the music scene, Maggio and Van Deurs are wise beyond their years – the proof is in the lyrics, the melody and the delivery.

Be sure to check out their music and keep an eye out for these guys! Listen to some songs below from their full length Grandfather:

————————————————————————————-

Wolves Among The Sheep: Alright, let’s begin with some background information. How and when was Tigers on Trains born? Were you two friends beforehand or did the music bring you together?

Mason: Well we’ve been good friends since 9th grade, a couple years before we started this project, but it was definitely music that brought us together. We met through a mutual friend and the first thing I said to Christian was “Wanna join an emo band?” The first thing he said to me was “No.” This repeated a few times until we actually became friends and started playing together. We were in a couple of “bands” together until we decided (in October of 2006) that all we needed were two acoustic guitars and our voices to make the music that we wanted to make.

WATS: What the story behind the name of the band? Do you guys love animals as much as we do?

Love is a strong word. But both of us definitely respect animals, and appreciate their wide range of skill sets. The name of the band came from a lyric in one of the early songs we wrote (before Tigers on Trains existed), entitled “Indian Ocean.” There’s little chance of anyone ever hearing that song. But lyrically the “tigers on trains” were a metaphor whose meaning was quickly forgotten, if it ever had one.

“That’s one of the things that’s great about art. You can create something out of thin air, something totally unrelated to reality, and that can carry an emotional power of its own and evoke that feeling in not only the listener, but also the artists themselves.”

We learn, as we age, that we’ve learned nothing;

And I always say, I’m just astonished at how much you learn as you grow older and how it never stops. When I was 21, I realized that I didn’t know anything at 17, and then at 25, I realized I didn’t know anything at 21, and now at 31, I realized I didn’t know anything at 25. But it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. I’m always wondering if when I’m 80, am I gonna be looking back to when I was 75 and going, you know, “That person didn’t know anything?” When does that process of growing stop?

When I listen back to all of that stuff, I see mistakes I made, but also the sparks of something I was doing that was eventually going to be great. It’s all very strange.

The Antlers – Bear (Official Video)

The much anticipated official video for ‘Bear,’ a powerful track off of Hospice, a record that has caused quite the incredible commotion beneath the floor boards of the music scene for much of 2009 – skyrocketing The Antlers to the forefront of SXSW and the indie music world, has officially been released and can be streamed on Pitchfork – or below, or both – whatever works best!

On the surface, ‘Bear’ seems to follow a couples’ struggle and the toll that it takes on their relationship; old enough to make their own decisions but not to deal with the consequences, the process of a blossoming romance coming to a halt, lovers becoming a strangers within an instant and how to deal when you find yourself isolated and detached from a world that has now become foreign to you.

However, the video depicts the song through a different view point. First off, the video takes place in a forest during the dead of winter – a sure way to call my attention! The woman in this video is wheeling a barrow which is carrying something extremely heavy and throughout her path, she struggles. The men of The Antlers (who are looking quite sharp, might I add) witness her stumbling and race to come to her aid but are too late, for the gigantic black weight taking its toll on her frame has fallen from the barrow, onto a rock and cracked, exposing a black ooze, left dripping against the Earth’s mass. The woman is not freed however, for Silberman helps to lift the mass and places it back where it has fallen from and the woman continues on her journey towards wherever she was going while the band remains and looks on.

Perhaps, that black ooze is meant to represent the cancerous mass that seems to plague Hospice’s heroine throughout the entirety of the album and although the narrator can exert himself and do his best to help her cope, he can never free her from the looming weight that she is cursed to carry, all on her own?

I suppose under whatever specificity of terms you interpret the meaning of this song to be, the one thing which it calls to mind is the idea of an unexpected and haunting burden, the desire to be freed from it, but the reality of our human wants being too weak to overcome the inevitable plans of fate.

New York City’s own Evan Dennis did a wonderful job of directing the video. Do not hesitate to show him some love on his Twitter page.

‘Bear’ is a powerful song and fits perfectly into the devastatingly beautiful composition of Hospice – which if you have yet to hear, you should, as soon as possible.

P.S. On a more personal note, the Sheep went out to graze almost two days ago and has not been back since. She left all of her belongings, including her favorite bag of citrus treats and her neon yellowish-orange headband at the barn, which leaves me with hope that she has not gone too far. If you happen to see her out there though, mistaking orange trees and sunny beaches for farmland and prairie fields – just put a leash on her and guide her home. Thanks!

Don’t you know it’s true?

[Teen represents] passion, obsession, excitement, energy, spontaneity, mystique, yeah, like kind of irrational love you know, deep, irrational love, being wild. Dream represents fantasy, leaving reality, it represents so many things, it represents distortion, it represents one tiny feeling becoming a huge feeling.

BEACH HOUSE INTERVIEW from wow magazine on Vimeo.

Thank you to Wow Magazine for sharing this video with the world and allowing us to share it with you.

Also, swing by The Alternate Side for two amazing studio performances of ‘Zebra’ and ‘Better Times’ accompanied by none other than another great interview!

Usually, I am not a fan of snow but today, only if even for a little while, I am grateful to the weather. With nothing to do (there’s always a paper, though), no where to go (except to find a source of hydration) and not a thing to worry about (okay, that’s never true but let’s pretend) I am going to take advantage of this opportunity; my world on pause, under blankets of white and glide, effortlessly, through as much of the Beach House catalog as I can before reality creeps its way into my day like the green, slimy leech that it is.

Are you snowed in? Join me! It doesn’t snow where you are? Join me anyway! The Sheep might be a little late though, she has a date with destiny philosophy. The world only stops for snow in America, it seems.

Beach House – Daytrotter Session;

What a fantastic way to begin a brand new month! Ladies, gentlemen, sheep, wolves, tigers and robots alike, we present you with Beach House’s Daytrotter session! The song selection for this session is great and includes a bunch of our own personal favorites (one being ‘Zebra,’ of course).
